Guide to 08XX Numbers
0800 – Free to call
0800 Numbers are free for potential customers to call from UK landlines. They are publicly recognised as ‘free phone numbers’ and attractive to any new potential customers. Most customers would much rather deal with a company that offers a free 0800 number.
The main benefit of an 0800 number is that you’re offering your customers a free number to call you on. You will also save money with 0800 numbers as in most cases it is cheaper for a customer to call you on an 0800 number rather than you calling them on their number. You can also keep track of your advertising response rates, monitor statistics and keep track of the effectiveness of having an 0800 number.
0800 calls are automatically redirected to the number of your choice. You will not need any extra lines or equipment, you will not need to change your existing telephone number and you will be able to manage your 0800 number online. Once you have your 0800 number it is yours for life, even if your phone provider introduces new dialling codes or you move premises.
0844 – Callers charged at lo-call rate
0844 numbers provide national representation whilst generating a revenue share to your business from each call. 0844 numbers and can be dialled from all landlines and mobiles.
Your calls can be diverted to whichever landline or mobile number you choose. You can change this ‘destination’ number as often as you want at no cost. You will not need any extra lines or equipment and you will not need to change your existing telephone number. In addition, you can manage your 0844 number online.
0845 – Callers charged at lo-call rate
0845 numbers are a great way to offer your customers a UK local rate number as it is widely recognised that calls to these numbers are charged at the cost of a local call. They can allow calls to be diverted to mobiles or landlines anywhere in the world and are ideal for businesses that want to make the most of the benefits provided by marketing numbers whilst keeping costs to a minimum.
Some of the more popular uses for 0845 numbers are customer service lines, sales and payments lines, advice lines and main contact numbers. There is no need to change 0845 numbers if you move offices or location, the number simply goes with you. If in the future your phone line provider changes your phone number or adds an extra digit, this will not affect your 0845 number.

0870 – Callers charged at national rate*
*In 2008, Ofcom will introduce its ruling stating that unless the caller is advised at the start of the call – the cost of dialling an 0870 number must be no more than that of an equivalent national call to a number beginning 01 or 02.
When your customer phones your 0870 number the call is automatically and instantly redirected to whichever phone number you request. You can change this ‘destination’ number as often as you want at no cost. This is great if you decide to move offices or simply want the calls redirected to another phone for a short period – whatever you do your 0870 number stays the same.
0870 numbers can also point to your mobile number if you wish but you need to be aware that you will pay the mobile tariff for each incoming call since two calls are now being made – the caller pays the standard rate for calling the 0870 number and you will pay the rate for calling your mobile number.
You can keep the numbers for as long as you want to use them and they will be registered in your name.
You can have as many 0870 marketing numbers as you require and you don’t have to be a small or large company to own them. If you are an individual or a sole trader you can still use 0870 numbers which saves you giving out your home phone number.
If your organisation receives a considerable amount of calls from other countries, an 0870 number is most suitable as they are accessible internationally by adding the UK national prefix (+44) to the number. Rates will vary depending on which country the call is received from.
0871 – Callers charged at a fixed rate
0871 numbers work in the same way as 0870 numbers, but with caller rates fixed to provide a revenue share from each call. Usually, the greater the amount of incoming calls, the higher the rate of revenue share from each call. 0871 numbers are therefore especially beneficial to organisations that operate and receive calls 24 hours a day, such as advice, help and technical support lines.
